SCHOOL MANAGEMENT
Schools are growing in many different parts of Indonesia from National Schools to SPK Schools. They are competing to attract customers’ attention with their ‘product’. It is really challenging for school owners and managers. They have to be very innovative in many ways but sometimes they focus on the wrong division. As an educational institution, the focus should be on the academic division, not the others since they are all the supporting units. The school supporting units are GA, Finance, PR, and HRD.
A small school can only consist of a teacher and a student
and when they have good programs there will be more teachers and students. In
the beginning, this particular teacher can also be a principal, an accountant, a recruiter, a marketer, and other professionals. As the school grows, he needs support
to handle different types of activities. One thing he should really focus on is the ACADEMIC MATTER. Customers come because of this, product.
It is true that delivering subjects well in the classroom
needs skillful teachers. My biggest question is who knows better if the
teachers are qualified or not. I believe the academic unit and in this case
Principal of a school. Do we need an HRD person? Yes, but for teaching staff, the
task is limited to paperwork such as contracts or agreements. The academic Unit
is the user and they know what kind of teachers they need. So if an institution
focuses on HRD Unit in order to attract customers’ attention, the target is
missed.
How can an institution make a profit if it does not have
good programs? People study in a certain institution because of the programs
offered not because of the good financial management of certain institutions. It is
needed but it is not considered by the customers.
As we can see in ads, schools promote the programs from A
to Z attractively but when they join the school, the programs are not as
advertised. People talk and they might tell others or even move to other
schools. Schools really need good marketing people to promote the school
programs but the school programs must be good so the students stay.
Others say, ‘Look they study here because the school is
clean and safe. The building is repainted annually. I would like to say yes it
is absolutely necessary but how long they will enjoy that situation if there
are no good programs.
I am not arguing that those supporting divisions are not
important. It is necessary to have those divisions in a big school but most of
the time they become ‘determining units’. The academic Unit cannot give an additional
lesson to students because the cleaners must clean the classrooms and they have
to go home on time or they are very tired. Students cannot do activities on
Saturdays because there are not enough security people on Saturdays.
There are more reasons not to support the academic unit in
certain schools and this holds back the school's development. I am just trying to
say that this is an education business and the product is the school programs. The
target is selling the school programs. Then the focus is on the teachers’
development as persons who are going to deliver the school programs.
