Why running is so great for cognitive development
A few persons asked me why I run intensively at my age, isn’t it dangerous for my legs? Why not just walk? And other questions concerning bones. At the beginning my answer was just like this, “I do it gradually. I started two years ago by walking short distance then long distance. After that I started jogging for 5K then 10K. Now I can run 15K”. My muscles in my legs are getting stronger and I am not easily tired.
Now I am aware of other things
that happen to me after I run regularly. My motivation to learn is growing and my
memory returned bit by bit. I conducted small research and I found that Running
is great for cognitive development because it boosts brain health by increasing
blood flow and oxygen to the brain, stimulating the growth of new neurons
(neurogenesis), and increasing the volume of the hippocampus, a brain region
vital for memory and learning. It also releases neurotransmitters and
brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which improve mood, focus, memory,
and overall cognitive function like problem-solving and executive function.
Let’s see it more details how running physically could change the brain. First, running increases the blood
flow. It boosts circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to brain
cells, which supports overall brain health. Second, regular exercise promotes
the creation of new neurons and strengthens connections between them, enhancing
the brain's ability to learn and adapt. Finally, Hippocampus Grows. The
hippocampus is a key area for memory and learning that can naturally shrink
with age.
Running also triggers the release
of beneficial neurochemicals like endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine,
which improve mood, focus, and cognitive function. Exercise increases BDNF
levels, a protein that acts as "fertilizer" for the brain, helping to
grow new neurons and strengthen connections. In addition to that it enhances
executive skills such as planning, organizing, multitasking, and
problem-solving, leading to greater mental clarity.
Running also gives us long-term cognitive
advantages, such as enhanced memory and learning, protection against cognitive decline,
and better sleep and mood.
So, it does not matter how old
you are start moving. Do it step by step and slowly. Our body will get better
and stronger. Allah has created this amazing body for us and we have to take
care of it by doing exercise suitable for each individual. We do not stop
exercising because we get old, we get old because we stop exercising
